Do data centers really
use that much water?

The viral chart is directionally right and numerically misleading. U.S. data centers consumed 17.4 billion gallons directly in 2023 — small next to agriculture. But that figure quietly excludes the water consumed generating their electricity, which is another 12× larger.

LBNL's own headline is 17.4B gal — direct onsite only. Adding the water consumed generating the electricity data centers draw brings the operational footprint to 228.8B gal, which still excludes hardware manufacturing and construction.

17.4 and 211.3 are each independently rounded to one decimal; the unrounded figures (17.44 + 211.34) sum to 228.8.

Withdrawal
Water removed from a surface-water or groundwater source. It may later be returned.
Consumption
Water not returned to the immediate watershed, usually because of evaporation or incorporation into products.
Applied irrigation
Gross water delivered to a field, lawn or golf course. Includes consumptive use plus runoff, drainage and delivery losses.
Direct onsite
Water used at the facility itself.
Indirect electricity
Water consumed at power plants that generate electricity used by the facility.

The bottom line

Data centers remain a small national water user next to irrigated agriculture — but local basin stress and potable peak demand can still be material.

National scale is not the same question as local impact. A facility drawing from a stressed aquifer or a peak-summer grid matters even if the U.S. total looks small.
